The February 2003 fire at the Station in West Warwick, Rhode Island, during headliner Great White's set, is one of the worst nightclub fires in American history. The fire started as the tour manager set off a fiery display of pyrotechnics. Soundproofing foam installed on the stage caught fire from an emission of the sparks. It spread quickly, engulfing the club in five and a half minutes. 100-plus were killed and 230 were injured; Daniel Biechele, the tour manager, plead guilty to negligence and the nightclub owners, two brothers, were tried for using flammable foam on stage. Bon Scott's Highway To Hell

Bon Scott, the original singer of AC/DC was a heavy metal wild man, known as much for his drinking as his ferocious vocals. In February of 1980, the 33-year old front man went out drinking in a London club and fell asleep in the back of a car. He never woke up. "Pulmonary aspiration of vomit" was the officially cause of death, but some suspected that Scott had died from alcohol poisoning, while others felt that he may have suffocated himself on the fumes from the running car. The Guardian reported that an unknown mystery man discovered the body, but no one could track him down. Others say the music industry knew of his death "hours" before Scott's corpse was discovered.

RIP - Robin Gibb (May 20, 2012) The Bee Gees

Robin Gibb was an English singer and songwriter brother, Maurce Gibb and younger brother Barry Gibb, made up the Bee Gees.  The group is one of the most popular and successful of all time and almost single-handedly sent disco into the stratosphere during the late ’70s.  But don’t hold that against them.  They have sold in the neighborhood of 225 million albums throughout their career.  And their younger brother, Andy Gibb, had a successful career as a pop musician as well.  While Robin was still just a child, the Gibb family moved from the Isle of Man to Australia where the brothers Gibb, or Bee Gees, formed their band.  Robin was considered the lead singer but Barry did sing lead on several of the groups hits, so he might say otherwise.  After relocating back to England in 1966, the Bee Gees began getting noticed.  Their early albums were more English folk rock and progressive than their late ’70s disco output, and their first album of significance, 1967′s Bee Gees 1st (which it wasn’t) can easily stand along any number of the great British Invasion albums of its time.  The album ultimately cracked the Top 10 in both America and the UK.  Their later pre-disco albums leaned more rock and even progressive at times.  

In 1977, the soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever was released, and with several Bee Gees tunes on it, their lives changed.  The album sold over 15 million copies, and although it didn’t “invent” disco, it certainly helped bring it to the suburbs of white America.  Over the next year and a half, the Bee Gees earned six consecutive #1 singles – holding the record until  Whitney Houston came along.   After disco crashed during the ’80s, the Bee Gees took a long break during which time Robin released a handful of moderately successful solo albums.  He also released solo albums during the early years of the Bee Gees.  The group reunited during the ’90s and again, the 2000s to respectable success, both on record and on tour.  Their final live performance as a trio came in 2002.   On May 20, 2012, Robin Gibb died of cancer surrounded by family.

Joe Bonamassa is back for his 13th album, Driving Towards The Daylight. The album was produced by Kevin Shirley and saw the dynamic duo return to Las Vegas for a back-to-basics album, which was recorded at the same studio as their first joint album, You & Me. Driving Towards The Daylight is definitely the bluesiest album from Bonamassa in the past few years. The album consists of four originals and seven covers. Kevin Shirley wanted to push Bonamassa out of his comfort zone and did so by bringing in a talented group of session players, including Aerosmith’s Brad Whitford.Driving Towards The Daylight is yet another fine performance from the blues rock titan. The album sees Joe return to the blues and in a big way. With this being Bonamassa’s 13th album, it may finally be the lucky one that sees Joe driving towards the Grammy.
Driving Towards The Daylight was produced by Kevin “Caveman” Shirley (Black Crowes, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin), making this Bonamassa and Shirley’s seventh album collaboration in six years.

“We’ve taken some really traditional old blues songs – the Howlin’ Wolf song ‘Who’s Been Talkin’ and Robert Johnson’s ‘Stones In My Passway,’” says Shirley, “and we’ve tried to imagine how they would do them in a rock context. It’s a very exciting return to the blues in a very visceral way. It’s vibrant and it’s gutsy and it’s really, really rugged.”To move Joe out of his comfort zone, a unique group of musicians was assembled, including Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford (guitar), Blondie Chaplin (guitar), Anton Fig (drums and percussion), Arlan Schierbaum (keyboard), Michael Rhodes (bass), Carmine Rojas (bass), Jeff Bova and The Bovaland Brass, Pat Thrall (guitar), and Whitford’s son Harrison Whitford (guitar).

Brad Whitford, speaking from the studio in Vegas, said, “This is definitely more influenced by the stuff that the guys and musicians in this room love, early ‘60s English and American rock and blues. I guess we’ll never get that out of our system and its fun to come in here and find our own path down that highway.”The album features four Bonamassa-penned originals including the bruising opener Dislocated Boy, the road warrior’s title track Driving Towards The Daylight, Heavenly Soul, and Somewhere Trouble Don’t Go.

Other tracks include Bonamassa’s versions of Tom Waits’ New Coat Of Paint, Bill Withers’ Lonely Town Lonely Street, Bernie Marsden’s A Place In My Heart, and Willie Dixon’s All I Need. On the album closer, Australian rock singer Jimmy Barnes sings lead vocals on his 1987 hit Too Much Ain't Enough Love.Premiering today, and continuing each week for ten episodes is "Countdown To Daylight", the new reality series of 3-4 minute webisodes, featuring interviews with Joe and his band as well as behind-the-scenes footage of the band recording Driving Towards The Daylight in the studio.

 Hard Times: Kirk Hammet

Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett has revealed the music industry’s current woes has even affected them to the extent they can’t afford not to tour. He says: “The cycles of taking two years off don’t exist any more. We were able to do that because we had record royalties coming in consistently. Now you put out an album and you have a windfall maybe once or twice. But it’s not the way it used to be – a cheque every three months.” He says their merchandise takings paid for their new studio: “We basically take funds from wherever we can. This is a real luxury, but great things come out of this.” The band believe they best they’ll do at their Orion Music Festival in July is break even.

The actor who played David St Hubbins in This Is Spinal Tap has suffered a broken leg in a road accident. Michael McKean, who’s currently appearing in Broadway production Best Man, was struck by a vehicle in New York City yesterday. The 64-year-old is reported to be in a stable condition.

KK Downing has thanked fans for their support a year after Judas Priest announced he’d quit. The guitarist says: “I hope you have a fantastic time at festivals. I’m going to try to get to a couple myself in the UK – and hope to catch up with my old buddies who I used to traverse the world with. You know who you are.”

Rush singer Geddy Lee says he sometimes struggles to establish the headspace to deliver the band’s lyrics, which are all written by drummer Neil Peart. Lee explains: “There are times where there is a lot of discussion, when we get a lyric and it’s not happening. You sit down and say, ‘Tell me the story again – why is the character in this situation? What do you want him to be feeling?’ Other times, it’s quite clear to me, and when that happens I can bring my own interpretation into the music. It’s really important for me to be clear with him. I have to write a vocal melody and I have to mean it.”

Charlie Benante and Frank Bello of Anthrax have recorded a public service announcement for Musicians Opposed to Bullying. Bassist Bello says: “The people that are bullying you — girls, guys, whoever it may be — they’re feeling so badly about themselves, they have to take it on somebody else; that’s how they get it out. You have to understand that and be smarter and be somebody above them. And don’t be afraid to tell. I was close to my principal in school. When I was getting bullied, I talked to him, and he acted as a confidant. And he told me what to do; it was very secretive. You can do it all in secret. Don’t feel like there is no way out; there is a way out. And it’s not suicide. It’s absolutely not suicide. There’s a long life ahead of you.”

Hellyeah will complete their current tour as a four-piece after guitarist Greg Tibbett was forced off the road to deal with a family emergency at home. Singer Chad Gray says: “We all stand with Greg. There’s a lyric in our new song Band of Brothers that says, ‘I’ve got your band and you’ve got mine,’ and that couldn’t be more true for us right now.”

One of just six copies of Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band signed by the Beatles is being offered for auction. The framed album was signed by all four band members and has been verified as genuine. Only 132 signed Fab Four albums are believed to exist in total. Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo has recalled how his love affair with music started at an early age. The musician is known for his interest in genres far removed from the thrash he’s known for. He remembers: “My mom would try and get me to go out and dance to the bands that would perform parties at the social club. But I would be backstage, sitting on a piano stool and staring at the musicians in the band. My mom would say, ‘Come on, Dave! There are some pretty girls out there that want to dance.’ But I was more interested in watching the band performing.

Get Thrashed: The Story of Thrash Metal - DVD Review

There has been such a massive amount written about "Get Thrashed: The Story of Thrash Metal" — and the critical reaction has pretty much been raving across the board – that it almost seems anti-climatic to talk about the recent DVD release. On the other hand, the scores of folks who didn't have the pleasure of seeing the film, now get the chance to own the DVD (if you can find it), one that is not only essential for any fan of metal, but also an 11th commandment for thrash denizens. As for my take on the DVD, I find the documentary as stupendous as the rest of the critical world.

In countless ways, what really makes "Get Thrashed: The Story of Thrash Metal" so engrossing is the way it makes the viewer feel. Writer/director Rick Ernst has pieced it together with so many vintage — often black and white photos — and gritty live videos that one is transported back to 1985 to absorb ever sweat-drenched and bloody ounce of energy that would have permeated the scene around the world. For those of us that were around when it happened around the world (except India), the accounts are strikingly accurate as we have thought of and the mood conveyed 100 percent genuine. The excitement of a style carved out of punk's speed and heavy metal's muscle is captured in tales told by the numerous scene veterans (Gary Holt, Kirk Hammett, Katon W. De Pena, Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth, Lars Ulrich, Scott Ian, Mille Petrozza, etc), new school luminaries like MERCILESS DEATH, modern metal heros such as SHADOWS FALL, and critics like Ian Christe (author "Sounds Of The Beast"). From the pit violence, to the denim-and-leather fashion, to the explosive scene pockets (L.A., New York, Europe, etc), to the pinnacle Clash of the Titans tour event, to the blistering music, the DVD is a sure bet to send any viewer to really see what Thrash Metal was all about & the true trash metal fans running for their old tape collections. Especially for the 80's thrash fans like me who faced the challenge of even unable to get tapes of these bands in India.

Equally impressive is the manner in which Ernst squeezes in the most relevant commentary from the seemingly endless amount of interview footage, which must have been an absolute bitch to sort. The mission was to tell the story of thrash, which doesn't mean highlighting every musician that ever wore a patch-covered, sleeveless denim jacket over a leather coat. Obviously, it is impossible to please everyone, especially when your favorite band doesn't get the time you think it deserves, but Ernst gets around it with a bonus segment that covers damn near everyone else, albeit in briefer segments. To name just a handful: TESTAMENT, VIO-LENCE, FORBIDDEN, HEATHEN, DARK ANGEL, POSSESSED, HIRAX, VOIVOD, SODOM, AGENT STEEL, OVERKILL, NUCLEAR ASSAULT, WHIPLASH, HALLOWS EVE, and ANVIL. The bonus segment also includes examinations of scenes from other parts of the world, such as Canada and Germany. Director's commentary rounds out the bonus features.

It is unlikely I've told most of you anything that you haven't already heard. For the remaining few, your mission is a simple one: purchase "Get Thrashed: The Story of Thrash Metal" as soon as humanly possible.

Iced Earth: Alive in Athens (DVD)

Join me for a little Heavy Metal time travel as we go back to the year 1999 to find Iced Earth as they record their first concert performance ever. The album would be done in Athens, Greece in front of a comfortable but still sizable audience and be called Alive In Athens. If you are one of the many Metal bangers that own the triple CD set already, then you are well-aware about this concert and just how excellent it was in capturing the best songs that Iced Earth had to offer the world at that time. The recording found the band in tip-top shape and holding a solid footing in their quest for Heavy Metal dominance. Our return from this trip to 2006 will lead us to the news of an old archive being discovered and inside this would be a long forgotten filming of this concert. The footage would be raw and was shot by a three member video team present at the event. Conversion to a more reliable format using the technology available was a smart thought and the decision to share this with the legions of Iced Earth fans became an immediate one. 

The audio was given some remaster treatment and soon it was ready to be unleashed on the public. It was a great find for Metal as fans everywhere are scooping up bootlegs at conventions and people are posting their own recordings on mediums like MySpace or YouTube. As a concert itself there are moments in the film that make you feel as though you are watching from the balconies while others place you on the stage looking out to the crowd. There are no dynamic effects and instead it's just a sparsely decorated stage with the band members doling out the Metal in excellent fashion. The three cameras do a great job and while some might balk at the limited amount of videographers at least we got something from this monumental show. Recent interviews have found Schaffer himself displeased with the idea of this videos release but it is the only way to see a full concert with the former singer Matthew Barlow; a performer that a majority of the bands fan base misses very much. Sonically and visually I found nothing wrong with this release and totally recommend it for Iced Earth fans old and new. 

The amount of full concert footage from Iced Earth is currently limited to this release and if you find yourself wanting a show with this line up you need to look no further than here to get it. Twenty eight songs and running 2.5 hours you cannot go wrong with it. Iced Earth has had a number of lineup changes over the years and Schaffer as founder, remains the only constant of the musical vision. Everyone else in the band for this film has moved on to other pursuits in music and life by this time. This video finds the membership roster as Jon Schaffer (guitar), Matthew Barlow (vocals), James MacDonough (bass), Larry Tarnowski (lead guitar), Brent Smedley (drums) and Rick Risberg (keyboards). As a Metal fan that got into this band later than I should have I was happy to find this video released as it is a musical education in the bands back catalog. Favorite tunes are "Melancholy", "Burning Times", and "Travel In Stygian" among many others.

Bonus features include Jon in Athens and backstage footage. A booklet is included and loaded with photos, song lyrics and cool graphics that the group was known for. This is a must have for any Metal fan.
